Congress Passes Legislation to Make Public Epstein Documents

The Senate on Tuesday gave swift approval to a measure that will mandate the disclosure of investigative files related to the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, after a almost unanimous vote in the US House of Representatives and a reversal by the president and his Republican allies. Trump's team changed course after months of trying to forestall the cross-party initiative involving a controversy that has dogged the president since his return to the White House.

Expedited Approval in Congress

The Senate acted by general agreement, which needs acceptance from each senator but does not require a formal roll call vote, expediting the process. Hours earlier, the House voted decisively for the bill on a near-unanimous vote.

The public have been patient long enough. Jeffrey Epstein’s victims have waited patiently,” the top Senate Democrat said in a Senate remarks on Tuesday, before urging the Senate to pass it unanimously. “Uncover the facts. Allow openness to prevail.”

Future Action

The measure next will be sent to the president for his approval. He stated on Monday that he would approve the bill.

Even though the president has for months downplayed the uproar over the government’s handling of the scandal as a “false narrative”, he voiced approval for the House bill over the weekend, and stated he would give his assent if it is presented to him.

Support and Opposition

The Democratic party, along with those affected and their representatives who were present in a public section, applauded after the bill was passed. Lone dissent came from a GOP representative, who stated he feared the measure would make public personal information of people, persons of interest and others implicated in the investigation.
